Christeve (Community Nurse) Quote

Our Maori Men tend to think of themselves as the providers, that they have to look after the family. When there is sickness in the family, they are quick to get Mum to go to the doctors to get the kids checked up but won’t take themselves when they should. Men need to put themselves forward more often and consider their health for the sake of the family.

Thinking about heart disease, the men I see tend not to be exercising enough throughout the year. They’re not as fit as they could be or focused on their health. They tend not to be worried about themselves. Getting checked for heart disease is often last on their list of things they need to do. For some men it should be the first.

If men think they are at risk, they should make an appointment to see their Doctor or contact their local Hauora  and see if an appointment can be arranged to get their hearts checked.
